Rideau Lakes Municipal Candidates Meeting a Success
The following notes were prepared for the Review-Mirro by Citizens Democracy Forum (CDF) member Steve Kirby during the all municipal candidates meeting hosted by CDF at the Elgin Lions Hall, October 5, 2022.
The Citizens Democracy Forum held an all-candidates meeting for election to the Township of Rideau Lakes Council on October 24. The meeting was held at the Elgin Lions Hall on October 5. It was moderated by John Carley and Clint Halladay of the CDF. Dave Berofe and his wife, Celeste Mercier, also helped make the evening a success.
Both mayoral candidates -incumbent Arie Hoogenboom and challenger Carolyn Bresee attended as did:
Ward 1 candidates Cathy Livingston (incumbent), Sue Dunfield, and Paul Chvostek (Paula Banks sent her regrets)
Ward 3 candidates Joan Delaney (incumbent), Linda Carr, Ken Davies, Effie Warren, & Mary J. Daniel.
Ward 2 was not represented as both Marcia Maxwell and Jeff Banks were acclaimed.
Ward 4 was not represented because Bob Lavoie (incumbent), Ron Pollard (incumbent), and Deborah Anne Hutchings were at a Newboro Hall meeting for candidates in that Ward. Miss Hutchings was kind enough to send us her answers to the questions asked by the CDF. Mr. Lavoie sent late regrets and a handout.
The questions issued in advance were:
- What is your opinion on privatizing or contracting out municipal jobs i.e. garbage collection, roads, etc.
- How will you actively participate in moving the Township forward in reducing the carbon footprint
During the meeting the candidates were given the opportunity to elaborate on their written answers, tell a little bit about themselves, and then answer further questions from the 50+ people in attendance.
It was a good evening for local democracy in action!
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CAN FIND THE WRITTEN ANSWERS TO THE 2 QUESTIONS ON THE CITIZENS DEMOCRACY FORUM WEBSITE.
